Full Text of Questions:

Abortion

What is your position on the use of taxpayer funds in support of abortion (e.g. paying for abortion, promoting abortion, subsidizing organizations that provide or refer for abortion)?

Agriculture/Rural Life

In 2000, the Nebraska Legislature passed the Agricultural Opportunities and Value-Added Partnerships Act to strengthen value-added production and to create employment opportunities in the value-added agricultural production industry. After initial competitive grants under the Act, state funding was withdrawn in 2002 as a budget-cutting measure. The Act itself will terminate on January 1, 2004 unless reauthorized. Would you support or oppose legislation proposing to reauthorize the Agricultural Opportunities and Value-Added Partnerships Act, as a public-policy endorsement of value-added production and so that it may be considered for future funding during improved fiscal conditions?

Capital Punishment

Would you support or oppose legislation proposing to repeal the death penalty and replace it with a mandatory sentence of imprisonment for life without possibility of parole?

Education

What is your position on providing state tax credits or vouchers to parents and guardians to financially assist them in choosing the elementary and/or secondary schools—whether public or private, including religiously affiliated—that are best suited for their children?

Environment

What legislation or other public-policy initiatives, if any, would you advocate and pursue to deal with environmental concerns (e.g. swine waste management) associated with large-scale livestock confinement operations?

Euthanasia

Proposals have been made to make it legal for doctors to administer lethal injections or give lethal drugs to terminally ill patients who request that their death be caused in this manner. What is your position on changing Nebraska law to allow assisted suicide and euthanasia?

Gambling

What is your position on amending the Nebraska Constitution to allow for an expansion of legalized gambling activity? If support, what form(s) and under what stipulations?

Health Care

In your view, what legislation and/or other public-policy initiatives should be pursued, if any, to make adequate health care coverage more accessible and more affordable for all Nebraskans, regardless of economic or social status?

Human Life

Would you support or oppose legislation to prohibit embryonic stem-cell research; that is, research that uses stems cells from human embryos, which (embryos) are destroyed for this purpose?

Would you support or oppose legislation to prohibit the cloning of human embryos for the purpose of research or live birth?

Human Services

What is your position on seeing to it that, as a matter of legislation in Nebraska, newly arrived immigrant families have access to human services, including education, housing, transportation, justice system, health care, and compensation for work-related injuries?

Marriage/Family Life

In your view, what public-policy changes and/or initiatives should be pursued, if any, to address the high social and public costs of failed marriages and the State’s interest in promoting stable marriages, especially for the sake of children?

Welfare Policy

What is your position on providing adequate funding for job training, childcare, transportation and medical care (e.g. transitional benefits) for individuals striving to become self-sufficient by following the State’s track from welfare to work?
