    LB 50

Copy of LB 50 as introduced in the Legislature

LB 50 The Elementary and Secondary Educational Opportunity Act Explained

    LB 50 Questions and Answers

The Elementary and Secondary Educational Opportunity Act

A Means-Tested Scholarship Program Supported by Tax Credits

LB 50, the Elementary and Secondary Educational Opportunity Act, would allow individuals, married couples, corporations, partnerships, limited liability companies, estates or trusts to claim a 65% state income tax credit for contributions  to Scholarship-Granting Organizations to help children to attend privately-operated elementary and secondary schools in Nebraska.  The goal of this bill is to provide a tax incentive to encourage giving to qualified Scholarship-Granting Organizations, creating a new source of scholarship resources to help limited-income families, who live within a reasonable range of the federal free and reduced lunch income level, to afford the cost of private-school tuition.  To read LB 50, please visit http://bit.ly/dVhh3R.  For information on potential cost savings to the State of Nebraska by passing this bill, please visit http://bit.ly/9NadZM.

LB 50 will be heard by the Legislature’s Revenue Committee on February 16 and we need your help to get the bill advanced to the full Legislature for debate.  Here is what you can do.

    1. Write, call or e-mail members of the Revenue Committee and urge them to advance LB 50 to General File for debate.  Committees initially determine the fate of bills, so please contact these senators even if they are not from your district.

Revenue Committee members, district #, phone numbers, e-mail and mailing addresses:

    1. Spread the word about LB 50 to other members of your parish/school community and request that they also write, call or e-mail the senators on the Revenue Committee and urge them to support and advance LB 50.

    1. Please sign the online petition in support of LB 50 at the following link:  www.gopetition.com/petition/42550.html and encourage others to do the same.  Then tell others you have signed it by clicking “share” to post it on Facebook, Twitter, e-mail it to friends, etc. We hope to provide the petition and list of signers at next week’s Revenue Committee hearing.

    1. Senator Bob Krist (10) of Omaha introduced LB 50 and is the sponsor of this bill.  If Senator Krist represents your district, please contact the senator and thank him for sponsoring this bill.  Let him know that his efforts are appreciated.

    1. Attend the LB 50 public hearing on Feb. 16, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. in Room 1524 at the State Capitol in Lincoln to show support.

     THANK YOU!
