His Eminence, Cardinal Justin Rigali is Archbishop of Philadelphia and Chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee for Pro-Life Activities. Ordained a priest in 1961 and bishop in 1985, Pope John Paul appointed him the seventh Archbishop of St. Louis on January 25, 1994. On July 15, 2003, Pope John Paul II appointed him as the eighth Archbishop of Philadelphia where he is the spiritual leader for almost 1.5 million Catholics. He was named a Cardinal on September 28, 2003. He has served in numerous capacities in the Vatican, including the Secretariat for State, the Congregation for Bishops, the Pontifical Council for the Laity, and the Congregation for Divine Worship. As Chairman of the Bishops’ Pro Life Committee, His eminence guides and directs the U.S. Bishops’ Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities which works to teach respect for all human life from conception to natural death, and organize for its protection.
